Students loved themed lessons! So, they are always excited when their teacher lets them work on festive activities around Thanksgiving and Christmas! While students feel this is a way their teacher shares their excitement, it also keeps them focused. With so much festivity occurring in such a short period of time, it can take a lot of work to keep students focused on their learning. Thankfully, the Seasonal Secret Sentences are the perfect way to combine seasonal excitement with essential skills. Best of all, teaching sentence writing for Thanksgiving helps students gain confidence in a skill they will always use!
Honestly, teaching students to write in complete sentences can be excruciating! They need help to combine grammatical skills with words that make sense together. For instance, they have to focus on punctuation and capitalization. At the same time, they need to pay attention to spelling and spacing between words. On top of all this, the words have to make sense together! So, it is easy to see why it is imperative to combine fun and excitement with sentence writing. Thankfully, the Seasonal Secret Sentences do exactly this!
Students work on so many skills as they decode simple sentences!
Specifically, the seasonal pack includes 14 sets featuring the popular “secret sentences” format. The themes include Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter, Earth Day, Easter, Spring, and more! Each set has at least 7 pages of activities to help students create, read, write, and self-edit complete, simple sentences!
Students will gain so much confidence when learning to write “Secret Sentences!”
Building Sentence Skills
To get started, students identify the first letter of each icon and write the letter to decode the sentence. For example, a picture of an apple represents the letter a. So, students will write the letter in the selected location. Students always love cracking the code as they work on each letter!
After working on icon decoding, students will write the whole sentence neatly on the line. There is even a proofreading checklist to remind them about punctuation, spacing, and letter formation. Then, they will show their comprehension of the sentence by drawing a matching picture. Afterward, they will read their sentence aloud to a friend. Each friend will sign their name for accountability. Secretly, this adds even more writing practice!
Students will want to crack the code of all the sentences once they see how exciting this activity is. So, there is an enrichment option where students create their own coded sentences for peers to solve. This is such a fun activity to do before students head home on an extended break.
Using Seasonal Secret Sentences will be a student-favorite activity! They will love cracking the code and writing a sentence one letter at a time. Best of all, students will show so much reading and writing growth with Secret Sentences.
