Earth Day is one of my favourite holidays to celebrate in class. Students become aware of their responsibilities as citizens and feel empowered to make a difference!
Our discussion include:
•What is recycling?
•How can we save energy?
•Why should help the earth?
After our discussion, it’s time to get academic. My no-prep go to is an activity called MATH DOODLES that combines art and math together. In fact, students don’t even notice that they are actually doing a lot of core math practice as they create art!
With this activity, it’s all about doodles. First, students use the spinner or dice to create and solve math problem. Each time students write an equation, they find the doodle style that matches their answer! They can use this doodle to fill in any part of the picture. So simple, so fun, and such great practice!
You can choose any math skill from the cards provided so students know which kind of equations to create with the spinner. Another plus: students write their equations in the grid provided to cut off and hand in for assessment and accountability. There are sets for every seasonal holiday!

Would you like to try one with your students? You can download a free sample right now! This one is a colorful peacock to use any time of year, but could also double as a turkey for Thanksgiving if you like!
